Chapter 74: I Dreamed That Something Happened to You
Meng Yu sobbed as she recounted her sister's ordeal.
Chen Fan listened, his fists clenching involuntarily as a surge of anger welled up from deep within.
Indeed, one should never underestimate the evil in human nature.
In the apocalypse, ordinary people would kill each other just to survive. If one does not act in their own interest, heaven and earth will destroy them. As for the Awakened, their current situation far surpasses that of ordinary people, yet they show no mercy even to their own kind.
Those people had initially been friendly upon discovering Meng Yu's sister's abilities. But after tasting the benefits of foreseeing the future, they spiraled into insatiable exploitation.
Some Awakened who opposed this were forced to leave by the silent majority.
Those who remained grew increasingly ruthless with each passing day.
The entire story could be summarized in two words: devouring humanity!
Yet Chen Fan still had doubts.
Even if those people didn't know Meng Yu shared her sister's abilities, letting her go seemed illogical.
To Meng Xue, her sister was her greatest vulnerability. The moment she resisted, they could threaten her with Meng Yu's safety.
In fact, that's exactly what they had always done.
"You're wondering how I escaped, aren't you?" Meng Yu asked suddenly.
"Yes."
Chen Fan hesitated before answering truthfully: "You're Awakened, but your abilities aren't combat-oriented. Your physical capabilities pale in comparison to theirs. They would have kept you under constant surveillance, leaving no chance for escape."
"I didn't escape. They released me."
Meng Yu lowered her head. "They wanted to raid an elite-level beast's territory to steal a fruit that dramatically enhances mental power."
"Elite-level beast?" Chen Fan's breath caught.
If advanced beasts were equivalent to light armored vehicles, elite-level beasts were living heavy tanks! Not even sniper rifles or some grenade launchers could pierce their defenses.
More terrifying was their speed - reaching 200 meters per second. Each elite-level beast could single-handedly destroy a small city.
"They knew the danger," Meng Yu continued. "They insisted my sister accompany them for continuous predictions. But this time, she refused unless they freed me. She vowed to die rather than cooperate otherwise."
"They agreed?" Chen Fan sounded surprised.
"They did. When I learned of it, my mind went blank. I screamed and cried, refusing to leave. My sister... she begged me through tears."
Meng Yu's voice broke as fresh tears fell: "She said I had to go - that she wouldn't survive much longer. While alive, she'd use her powers to monitor whether Anshan City's people tracked me. But she warned this protection wouldn't last years. Afterward... everything would depend on me. And she made me swear never to reveal my abilities, lest history repeat."
Chen Fan understood. Under the scrutiny of precognition, any scheme would be exposed. Anshan City's Awakened knew this too - to them, Meng Yu was ordinary.
But this security only lasted while Meng Xue lived. As twins, Meng Yu might possess similar latent abilities. Given their moral bankruptcy, those predators would inevitably hunt her after Meng Xue's death.
"Your sister demanded secrecy, yet you told me. Weren't you afraid I'd be like them?" Chen Fan asked solemnly.
Meng Yu shook her head. "You're different. A good person. Besides..." Her body trembled slightly. "...the words are already spoken. If you were like them, it's too late regardless."
"..."
Chen Fan grimaced. While true, being called "a good person" felt oddly unsettling.
"Don't worry. I'll honor your trust. Your secret stays with me."
Relief washed over Meng Yu. Softly, she added: "My predictions only come through random people's dreams."
"I know."
Chen Fan smiled wryly. Precognition was useful, but overreliance bred complacency. His philosophy remained: improve relentlessly. With enough strength, any obstacle could be overcome.
Seeing Chen Fan's genuine disinterest in exploiting her, Meng Yu finally relaxed. The future remained uncertain, but for now, he seemed trustworthy.
"I came because last night... I dreamed something happened to you all."
Chen Fan's eyes widened but he remained silent.
Meng Yu continued: "I saw men waiting two kilometers outside Anshan City's gates. Their leader had binoculars. When your group emerged, they mounted antelopes and gave chase once you'd traveled some distance."
"Antelopes? How many?"
"About thirty. All armed with bows. The leader was bald and muscular. When they closed within 700-800 meters, you noticed them. You told the others to flee while planting your spear and drawing your bow..."
Chen Fan tensed. At full sprint, antelopes could reach 100 km/h - nearly 30 meters per second. Seven hundred meters meant roughly twenty seconds. Could he realistically eliminate thirty archers in that time?
Moreover, their bows outranged his. At 200 meters, they could already loose arrows. Would he survive their barrage?
